India's top rice imports

India's top rice imports are convinced that the government won't follow other countries in adopting restrictions on grains exports since the country has more than enough supplies to satisfy domestic demand. Record harvests imply rice production will grow to 117.47 million metric tons in 2019-20, whilst wheat output may grow into an all-time high 106.21 million tons, according to the farm ministry. Bumper crops will help the nation avoid curbs on overseas sales, according to a few of the country's key exporters. As the coronavirus continues to spread across the Earth, fear buying and worries over supply chain disruptions have contributed many states such as Vietnam, Russia and Kazakhstan, to quit exporting some staple foods to shore up supplies in the home. That's raised questions over whether India, the world's largest exporter of rice, will follow suit. "India is not deficient in production and, in the immediate future, there doesn't seem to be a cause for concern over food safety," stated Vijay Setia, manager at Chaman Lal Setia Exports Ltd., a rice miller and exporter. "We might have enough surplus for exports." Continued shipments of rice from India may cool prices and prevent consumers from fear buying. Vietnam, the world's third-largest shipper, has temporarily suspended fresh rice exports, while Myanmar also stated it may cut overseas sales to avoid domestic shortages. Rough rice futures in Chicago are around the most powerful for almost six decades. There may also be an increase in demand in Middle Eastern countries, '' he explained. Global milled rice production will likely be little changed from a year earlier at 499.31 million tons from 2019-20, based on data in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Ending stockpiles are seen at a record 182.3 million tons, up about 4% from a year earlier, the data reveal. While international grain stocks are rather comfortable and the weather outlook this season rather optimistic, states may adopt export limitations or increase stockpiling should the snowball accelerate quicker than anticipated or if the harvest outlook deteriorates, Fitch Solutions stated in a report. India has imposed export curbs during similar conditions previously, it said. Although there are no concerns at the moment,"if the fear of the unknown prevails and markets get dented with hoarding etc., then of course respective governments have to resort to means at their disposal to handle the situation," said Setia, a former president of the All India Rice Exporters' Association, who has traded the product for at least four decades. "Imposing restrictions on foreign exchange may be one such measure," he explained. Shipments of rice have slowed somewhat due to logistics issues, including a lack of employees and truck drivers, brought on by the nationally lockdown, said Vinod Kaul, the executive director of the association. Exporters are hesitating to sign new contracts with overseas buyers because of the slowdown in present imports, '' he said. "The lockdown is going to have some impact and we can not avoid it," Kaul said. "There is not any movement by the authorities to prohibit exports"
